Residential Perimeter Lighting That Secures Without Disturbing the Neighbourhood

Residential Perimeter Lighting That Secures Without Disturbing the Neighbourhood

A real-world proof of concept - showing how 48V DC perimeter lighting can protect a home, integrate with an alarm system, and keep the neighbours happy.

Case Study · Proof of Concept

3W LED per fixture 3m Spacing 48V DC System

When the owner of Intesec Electronics, a Cape Town security company, wanted to test a smarter approach to residential perimeter lighting, she didn't look far. She installed Perion Lighting's 48V DC system at her own home as a proof of concept, with the goal of showcasing what modern, low-voltage perimeter lighting can genuinely do for a residential property.

The result was compelling enough that Intesec now specifies Perion Lighting across their residential and commercial security installations.

"Effective home perimeter lighting doesn't have to mean harsh floodlights and unhappy neighbours. This installation proves you can have both security and subtlety." - PERION LIGHTING · VREDEHOEK INSTALLATION

The Setup: Simple, Smart, and Scalable

The system uses 3W cool white LED lights spaced at 3-metre intervals along the perimeter delivering consistent, gap-free illumination without the energy load of traditional security lighting. At 48V DC, the system is inherently low-voltage, making it safer to install and maintain than mains-powered alternatives.

The system runs on a day/night sensor that automatically switches the lights on at dusk and off at dawn. No timers to set, no switches to remember, no lights accidentally left on during the day. It simply works.

Solving the Neighbour Problem: Perion Light Deflectors

One of the most common objections to residential perimeter lighting is light spill - beams that bleed onto the pavement, into passing cars, or worse, straight into a neighbour's bedroom window.

Perion's answer is the Perion Light Deflector, fitted to all street-facing fixtures on this installation. The deflector shields the upward beam angle, keeping light directed inward along the perimeter where it's needed, not outward where it causes nuisance.

It's a small detail that makes a meaningful difference, especially in dense residential areas like Cape Town City Centre, where properties sit close together.

Why This Installation Matters

  1. A working proof of concept for residential perimeter security lighting
Real-world validation that Perion's system performs in a private home setting, not just commercial or estate environments.

  2. Alarm-ready by design
The dry contact input means integration with any standard home alarm system is plug-and-play, no rewiring, no specialist configuration.

  3. Neighbour-conscious from the ground up
Perion Light Deflectors redirect the beam inward, maintaining perimeter visibility while eliminating upward glare and light pollution

  4. Extremely low running costs
3W per fixture running every night adds up to almost nothing on your electricity bill, even with a full perimeter covered.

Is This Right for Your Home?

If you live in a security-conscious neighbourhood and want perimeter lighting that works with your existing alarm system, doesn't upset your neighbours, and costs next to nothing to run, this is exactly what Perion Lighting was designed for.

It's well suited to freestanding residential properties, cluster homes, sectional title complexes, and anywhere that perimeter visibility matters after dark.
