As the ATTSolar facility takes shape at the University of Pretoria, a 10.5 MWp solar PV plant on unused university land needed perimeter lighting that could match the scale of the investment, without slowing down an active EPC construction programme. The lights have to cover the full boundary evenly, work with the electric fence already up around the site, and respond intelligently to movement after dark. Nuvo Energy, appointed EPC contractor for the project, brought in Perion Lighting to deliver it.
The scope: 2.1 km of fence-mounted perimeter lighting, currently being installed to run on a dimmed standby mode and switch to full brightness the moment the site's CCTV picks up movement.

Most perimeter lighting problems on solar sites come down to the same thing: poles, trenching, and cable runs stacked on top of an already-busy construction programme. Perion Lighting's system skips that step entirely by mounting directly onto the fence that's already going in.
At ATTSolar, each fixture is being fitted to the electric security fence and faced downward, so a single light will illuminate both the inside and outside face of the fence line once installation is complete. No separate lighting structure, no extra poles competing for space along the boundary, the lighting simply becomes part of the fence.

How It's Being Installed
- Fixtures mount directly to the electric fence. No separate poles, no trenching, no additional civils work along the boundary.
- Every fixture faces downward. This single orientation will light both sides of the fence line from one row of fittings.
- Spaced every 6 meters. Consistent spacing across the full 2.1 km loop is designed to leave no dark gaps once the fence is fully lit.
- Set to run dimmed on standby. Under normal operation, the lights will hold a low baseline output, keeping energy use down along the full boundary length.
- Built to trigger full brightness on detection. The system is being connected to the site's CCTV, and once the dimmer unit arrives from the factory, movement along the fence will trigger the lights to jump to full brightness.
